Royal Oak Recycling & Bulk Disposal Guide

What goes at the curb, what doesn't, and what to do with the bulky stuff Royal Oak won't take.

Royal Oak's curbside program does a great job with everyday household recyclables, but it has clear limits. If you've ever set a couch at the curb only to watch it sit there for two weeks, this guide is for you. Below is a plain-English breakdown of what the City of Royal Oak's curbside service actually accepts, what it sends back, and how to handle the bulky items that need a different solution.

A & B Junk Removal is a locally owned, fully insured hauler based right here in Royal Oak. When the city can't take something, we usually can — same day, with upfront pricing and no surprise fees.

    Royal Oak Curbside Accepts

    • Paper, cardboard, and clean pizza boxes
    • Plastic bottles & jugs (#1 and #2)
    • Glass bottles and jars (rinsed)
    • Aluminum and steel food cans
    • Cartons (milk, juice, broth)
    • Yard waste in approved carts or paper bags (seasonal)

Rinse containers and leave caps on. Flatten cardboard. Recycling is collected every other week — check the City of Royal Oak Public Services schedule for your zone.

    What Curbside Won't Take

    • Furniture (couches, mattresses, dressers)
    • Major appliances (refrigerators, washers, dryers, water heaters)
    • Construction debris, drywall, lumber, or shingles
    • Tires, propane tanks, or large auto parts
    • TVs, monitors, and bulky electronics
    • Hot tubs, playsets, sheds, or fencing
    • Hazardous materials (paint, oil, chemicals)

These items either get left at the curb or come with city scheduling delays. We haul all of them (except hazardous materials) same- or next-day.

    When to Call A & B Instead

    Furniture & Mattresses

Couches, sectionals, dressers, bed frames, mattresses, and box springs. We disassemble on site so nothing scratches the walls on the way out.

    Appliances

Refrigerators, washers, dryers, dishwashers, ovens, water heaters, and AC units — we recycle the metal whenever possible.

    Garage & Basement Cleanouts

Decades of boxes, broken tools, old paint cans (we'll route hazardous items to the right facility), and everything in between.

    Yard & Landscaping Debris

Large branch piles, sod, mulch, old fencing, and shed tear-outs — far past what curbside yard waste will accept.

    Construction & Remodel Debris

Drywall, lumber, flooring, cabinets, and tile from kitchen, bath, and basement projects. Pair it with a dumpster rental for bigger jobs.

    Electronics & TVs

CRTs, flat-screens, monitors, printers, and old computer towers — none accepted at the curb, all handled by us.
